  • Profile

Robert Howell is an esteemed family law attorney with years of experience not only helping families navigate and reduce the damages of complex divorce and custody disputes, but taking on difficult and arduous trials as a Dependency lawyer. Before making the decision to practice family law in the early 2000’s, Robert enjoyed an entirely separate career as a theatrical designer of sets and lights, where he taught at UC Irvine, Stanford University, Bucknell College, Whittier College, and eventually finished his academic career as a tenured professor at Los Angeles City College.

It was Robert’s youngest son, who he adopted from foster care after a long and toilsome three-year process, that inspired him to pursue a second career as an attorney, so that he could help address the issues he witnessed first-hand in the adoption and foster care system. After becoming a practicing family law attorney, Robert joined the newly formed Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers as a courtroom attorney. His time in this position saw him handling 10 or more cases a day, and gave him the exposure and necessary experience to now be a proficient and confident attorney for difficult Dependency cases.

Since then, Robert has helped to train Minor’s counsel on questioning children in a court proceeding, lectured the Dependency court mediators on crossover issues between dependency and family law, and spoke to both the San Fernando Valley Bar Association and the San Gabriel Bar Association on the pitfalls of Judgements issued in Dependency court as it relates to family law proceedings. Robert brings decades of experience in family law cases to our firm.

Born in Caribou, Maine, Robert grew up in a military family, and has called many places home, including Massachusetts, Ohio, South Dakota, California, and now, Kent, Washington. He is the father of two sons who live in California, and is excited for the opportunity to be in Washington closer to the rest of his extended family.

When asked about someone he admires, Robert references Paul Robeson, a lawyer, activists, actor, and singer, not dissimilar to Robert himself. According to Robert, “This is a man who literally stopped the Spanish Civil war when he came to sing on the battlefield…both sides ceased fire to listen to him.” On days when he’s not working with his clients, Robert enjoys volunteering at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue, traveling, playing guitar, gathering with high school friends via Zoom to discuss music and life, and being a member of the Kent Arts Commission.
